The  Past Continuous Tense

Tipik cümle: They  were painting the house at this time yesterday. ( Dün bu vakitler evi boyuyorlardı.)

Affirmative ( Olumlu )	Negative ( Olumsuz)
I / He / She / It + was + Ving + Object We / You / They + were + Ving + Object	I / He / She / It + wasn't + Ving+ Object We / You / They + weren't + Ving + Object
Question ( Soru)
Was / I / he /she / it + Ving+ Object? Were we / you / they + Ving + Object?

Kullanıldığı yerler:

Geçmişte bellli bir zamanda devam eden olayları ifade etmek için bu zamanı kullanırız. Örneğin polis apartmandaki bir hırsızlık olayını aydınlatmak için apartmanda yaşayan insanlara olayın gerçekleştiği saatte, diyelimki akşam 10 da, ne yaptıklarını sorsun. Cevaplar şu türden olacaktır; o saatte televizyon seyrediyordum; o saatte bilgisayarda çalışıyordum; o saatte ev ödevimi yapıyordum gibi tipik "past progressive tense" le ifade ediebilecek cümleler olacaktır.

Örnek cümleler:  

1- When it started to rain ,we were playing footbal.
2- As I was going home, I saw a terrible accident.
3- We were living in Istanbul two years ago.

Bu zamanla sıklıkla kullanılan zaman ifadeleri.

1- at this time yesterday / last nigt / last week / last month / last year, etc.

2- when / while / as clauses ( when/while/ as ile kurulan yan cümleler)

3- ten minutes / days / years ago, etc.
